Preface

A common linguistic argument by Catholics asserts that since Catholics do not offer latria [latreia] to the Mother of Jesus, then they cannot be accused of Mariolatry. However, this word only occurs 5 times, all as denoting worship of God, and if the absence of this word means no worship is taking place, then no one worshiped Christ, since latreia is not used in direct reference to worship of the Lord Jesus (proskuneō usually being what is used, and latreuō only in Rv. 22:3). However, latreia is not the only one that is used for worship, and refraining from using that word does mean one is not engaging in worship. The word latria means to serve, coming from the word latreuō, used in describing service toward God even as to "serve the tabernacle" (Heb 13:10) and those who did so, and thus it is also used to describe pagan worship. (Acts 7:42; Romans 1:25) Rather than simply denying that one is engaging in worship because they do not use latria for their devotion, worship is to be determined by manner of devotion one is engaging in. And which includes the nature of attribution given to the object.

The English word "worship" is derived from Old English worthscipe, meaning "worthiness," and which can be used toward man, but when such worthiness is that of attributes, praise, and adulation which are nowhere given to to created beings, but to God alone, then one is indeed engaging in worship, regardless of what word one uses to describe it. And such is too often the case regarding the Mary of Catholicism, in both officially and implicitly sanctioned adulation.

Note: a helpful, more technical examination of the Greek words used for worship can be seen here and here, by God's grace.

Words for worship as found in the New Testament (note that the spelling of Greek words can vary somewhat in their English renderings)

Proskyneō/Proskuneō — a masculine noun meaning to prostrate, almost always in worship. It occurs 60 times, mainly for worship of God, but sometimes for false gods, including images and demonic incarnations, which is idolatry. (Acts 7:43; Rv 9:20; 13:4, 8, 12, 15; 14:9; 16:2)

It is used twice for obeisance before men, once in forbidding a pious man to do so, before Peter no less, (Act 10:25) and another in compelling false brethren to show obeisance before the feet of true brethren. (Rv. 3:9)

Furthermore it is used once in reproving John for trying to worship an angel of Christ, telling him to worship (proskyneō) God instead. (Rv. 22:8,9)

Thus this act of prostration normatively denotes worship, only once being clearly used for less than that, and worship is always the case when proskyneō is used as a volitional activity, or in the context of supernatural beings.

Nowhere is the act of believers bowing down to believers sanctioned, much less bowing down before a statue of them in prayer, praise and adulation, and ascribing to them attributes which are only ascribed to God. And which is blasphemous, and outside of worship of God this manner of prostration and ascription is only seen in pagan worship, which is idolatry.

Proskunētēs — a masculine noun, which occurs just once (John 4:23) and describes those who worship God. Therefore latreia is not the only word that uniquely means worship, contrary to what many Catholics argue.

Sebō/Sebomai — A verb which occurs 10 times, denoting worship of God as well as false gods, and to describe devout persons.

Sebazomai. A verb occurring once (Rm. 1:25) in describing those who worshiped and served false gods.

Latreuō — Verb, denotes service of worship. It occurs 21 times, mostly as "serve" in describing the activity of worship of God, and twice for service to false gods. (Acts 7:42; Rm. 1:25: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshiped [sebazomai (G4573)] and served [latreuō (G1391)] the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

It is never used for service to man, and is what we see Catholics giving to the Mary of Catholicism, to whom they ascribe Divine attributes and functions, and dedicate themselves.

Latreia — From latreuō; service of worship. Occurs 5 times as denoting service toward God, not any created being, yet it is corespondent to the dedicatory service of Catholics to their Mary.

Eusebeō — An adjective, to be pious, devout, used only for worshipers

Eusebēs — Verb. Reverent, that is, pious: used as towards diety or parents

The focus is on words used primarily for worship, and except for one (tôwdâh), I will not provide all the text for all words due to time and numerous occurrence of them, but which should be viewable by mouse over pop up. TÔWDÂH [H8426; feminine noun], to-daw'; from H3034; properly, an extension of the hand, i.e. (by implication) avowal, or (usually) adoration; specifically, a choir of worshippers:—confession, (sacrifice of) praise, thanks(-giving, offering).

[This word is only used in worship of God, including in confession, sacrifices and offerings made to Him, which in Scripture is only given to one Heavenly being, God, while Catholics engage in making offerings and sacrifices to their fabricated Mary, and prayer in seeking to be made pleasing in her sight.]

Conclusions:

From this study of words we can see (by God's grace) that any assurance the Catholics are not engaging in worship in their "hyperdulia" of Mary, that they are not crossing the invisible line into "latreia" (service of worship) is plainly specious. For just as idolatrous souls were quite obviously engaging in worship described as proskyneo or latreuo or sebazomai, or Hebrew words used for worship, even if latreia or tôwdâh was not used to describe them, so also can Catholics.

While sometimes words for worship can be used in regards to obeisance toward men, yet as with the words for praise, they are never used in regards to created beings being bowed or prostrated to in adulation and praise and prayed to as unseen beings having supernatural abilities in the heavenly realm, including the ability to hear corporate, even mental prayer in Heaven from those on earth, and engaging in making sacrificial offerings to them. Much less before representative statues.

And which in Scripture constitutes worship, with such activity and ascriptions being unseen among believers toward anyone but God, and otherwise they belong to the pagan world. And thus by engaging in such towards Mary, it is evidenced that many Catholics are materially engaging in worship, or at the least blasphemy (if a difference can be made), albeit ignorantly.

In response some Catholics argue that one cannot engage in worship if that is not intended in the persons heart. However, this is not necessarily the case, for one can easily be unaware of what constitutes worship, including of money, and in any case one can deny they are engaging in such, even taking the mark of the Beast (Rv. 13) by denying it represents worship of him. And Scripturally idolaters are described as being such, not necessarily based upon their hearts, but as evidenced by their manner of (including Marian-like) dedicatory actions and ascriptions.

And in any case, Catholicism is guilty of disobeying the Scripture admonition “not to think of men above that which is written,” (1 Corinthians 4:6) not simply to prevent division, but because God knows the heart of men, and like as the Israelite ended up worshiping the bronze serpent which God used as an instrument of deliverance, (Num. 21:6-9; 2Kg. 18:4) so likewise do men do with mere mortals, as Catholics do with Mary, exalting her far far above what is written, and contrary to how God speaks of her in Scripture. In which no NT believer even bowing down to another in obeisance (except in washing feet) is ever sanctioned, let alone being given adulation and ascriptions that are nowhere given to men, by to God alone.
