Jehovah's Witnesses are the adherents of a sect which originated during the latter part of the 19th century. To some people the sect is better known as "Russellism." It is only in recent years that the name "Jehovah's Witnesses" was adopted. Why this change of name? Was it because people were quite generally being warned against Russellism? Was it because this new name would give them a better chance to mislead the unwary.'

Their beliefs you will find in the "Studies of the Scriptures,"~published in six volumes. Also in anything published by "The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society." Also, whatever is sponsored by "The International Bible Students Association."

"Jehovah's Witnesses" are very zealous in making propaganda. As a result of such propaganda you find some of them in almost any part of our Country. At any rate they will canvass your community with their literature. They are convinced that they have the light, and that you are in utter darkness. And they carry on an extensive propaganda to impart their light to others. So that each year a large number come in contact with their dangerous teachings.

THE FOUNDER

Charles Taze Russell was the founder of this movement. In the eighties of the last century he sold his Men's Furnishing Store to devote himself to the study of the Scripture. He lectured at various places. He also published somewhat extensively. He died in 1916.

Russell had commenced a task which was far in excess of his qualifications. Even though he had no knowledge at all of the original languages in which the Bible was written, and although he had no higher education, yet he boldly set himself in opposition to the church of all ages. He condemned the translators of the Bible and denounced the ministers for teaching what they did. The church, according to Russellism, belongs to the ecclesiastical wing of Satan's organization.

Mark this well! Russellism condemns the teaching of the church of all ages. Christ has said that He would build His church, and through His Spirit lead her into all truth. But Russell tells us that the church has remained in darkness. Only to Russell and his followers has Christ revealed the truth.

BIBLE AS AUTHORITY?

Russell claims that he acknowledges the authority of the Bible. He quotes it repeatedly. In the introduction to his first volume he even deplores the fact that people are forsaking the Bible. But, as we shall see later on, he frequently twists it to fit his own teachings. His works, as well as those of Rutherford, are full of exegetical jugglery. Their conclusions are frequently sheer nonsense.

Let us now proceed to test the teachings of Russellism on some fundamental points.

THE CHRIST

"What think ye of the Christ?" This is a very fundamental question. Concerning the person of Christ the Bible tells us that He has been from of old, from everlasting. That was in the beginning with God. That lie was God. That He was the Word by whom all things were made.

Russellism plainly denies His deity. Jesus Christ was a created being. He was originally neither more nor less than a perfect man. And when the prophet says: "Whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting-." Russell reads: "Whose goings forth have been (foretold) of old, from everlasting." Russell merely perverts Scripture by slipping in the word "foretold."

The incarnation Russell explains as follows: "Neither was Jesus a combination of the two natures, human and spiritual. The blending of two natures produces neither the one nor the other, but an imperfect, hybrid thing, which is obnoxious to the divine arrangement. When Jesus was in the flesh, He was a perfect human being; previous to that He was a spiritual being; and since His resurrection He is a perfect spiritual being of the highest or Divine order." Russell clearly teaches that Jesus was merely a man when upon earth.

And that in the face of the plain teaching of the Bible. It teaches that "God was manifest in the flesh." In other words, He who became flesh was God. We are told "The Word was made flesh." Yes, and at the same time remained God. For, the "Word dwelt among us." [1Tim. 3:16; Jn. 1:14.]

By denying the Deity of Christ, both before and after His incarnation, Russellism robs Him of the glory due Him. But it also brands Him as a shameless falsifier, for Christ Himself claimed to be the Son of God. Jesus accepted divine honor bestowed upon Him in the confession of Peter. On more than one occasion He clearly set Himself up as God. The Jews said, "Thou makest thyself equal with God." If Jesus was not, He was the worst religious fraud the world has ever known.

Note, also, how Russell explains the death of Christ. Bear in mind that, according to Kussell, Jesus was merely human when upon the earth. And what does he tell us about that man? "He is no longer human in any sense or degree." "His human existence ended on the cross." "It was necessary that the man Jesus Christ should never live again, should remain dead ... to all eternity." This may be shocking. But this is exactly what Russell teaches. "The Mediator who died on the cross no longer exists. He has not triumphed over death. The Bible tells us there is one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus. But Russel tells us that he does not exist any more.

What what then about the human body of Christ? The body has disappeared. How- does Russell dispose of that fact? This is easy for him: "We know nothing about it, except that it did not decay or corrupt .... Whether it was was dissolved into gases or whether it is still preserved somewhere as some grand memorial of God's love, of Christ's obedience, and of our redemption, no knows; nor is such knowledge necessary."But,” you say, "the Bible relates that Jesus appeared after His death." The risen Saviour appeared to His disciples even ten times. And He said on one occasion: "Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I myself: handle Me and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see Me have." [Lk. 24:39] Surely you say, Russell cannot explain that, if he denies the resurrection of the body-.

But you are mistaken. No difficulty for Russell at all. At this point he entertains us with some more of his exegetical jugglery, which is so common in his writings. As also in the writings of his successor Rutherford.

Listen to what Russell says, "The human body of flesh and bones, etc., and its clothing, which appeared suddenly, while the doors were shut, did not go out of the door, but simply disappeared or dissolved into the same elements from which he had created them a few moments before."

This denial of the bodily resurrection of Jesus is a very serious matter. We know what an importance the Bible ascribes to it. Paul says, "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also that are fallen asleep in Christ have perished."

At this point we find a glaring contradiction in the teachings of Russell. He teaches that Jesus was originally only a created spirit. He gave up His spirit being when He became man. He was merely a man when upon earth. And as a man He is dead to to all eternity. And yet, after His death He is a spirit of divine order. How is this possible? Russell makes it very easy for you again. If you only accept his word for it. He says: "He was created anew." But you say: "I don't understand that." Of course, you don't. I don't either. How something that does not exist any more can be created anew, is more than any intelligent man can grasp.

But Russell has some more originality in store for us. Let us see what he says about the second coming of Christ. Remember that Christ is now, according to Russell, merely a spirit. And it is as a spirit that He comes again. The Bible tells us every eye shall see Him. But Russell claims His coming is invisible. And, mind you, He has come already. Yes, and He has been here all the while since 1874, This may startle you somewhat. But Russell has come to this conclusion by a process of chronological and mathematical reasoning founded partly on the Hebrew Jubliee years. And Rutherford refers to the creation of the first labor organization in the year 1874 as a proof that the Lord returned in that year.

Christians have for centuries believed that the glorious advent of Christ will be accompanied by great changes and revolutions in both the earth and sky. They are convinced that Matthew 24 and other passages warrant such a belief. Shall we exchange that for the errors of a false teacher?

Surely, Russell does not honor the Christ. He has taken away our Lord, and we know not -where lie has laid Him.

SALVATION

According to Russellism, the Atonement of Jesus Christ was that of a man. "As a human being He gave himself a ransom for men." It was his flesh, His life as a man, His humanity, that was sacrificed for our redemption. His death, therefore, was the death of a creature.

But what then is left of the atonement of Christ? Such teaching robs it of all its power. The Scriptures testify that no man by his wealth, his self-sacrifice, or his character can redeem himself, much less redeem anyone else. How then could we trust the redemption of our souls to a mere man'. It is exactly because Christ was God, that He could bear the burden of God's wrath against sin, and thus obtain eternal redemption for us. But, if His sacrifice was that of a mere man, our redemption can never become a fact.

Moreover, it is also evident that Russell does not consider the atonement sufficient for our salvation. He says: "We, as members of Christ's body are yielding up our lives in sacrifice during this age, and these sacrificed lives counted in with His constitute the blood of Christ which seals the new covenant between God and the World." So Russell teaches that our sacrifices are part of the ransom price for sin.

Russell predicted that the final consummation of this age was to come in 1914. In that year the present order of things of this world would terminate, and the millennium would set in. Then all evil would be crushed and righteousness and peace would fill the redeemed world. This is stated repeatedly.

Perhaps you think the world does not look like it very much. But that is because you don't see it. You don't have the light that the Russellites have. I have heard people coming to their rescue by saying that the Russellites had predicted the World War. That came in 1914. But then I would say, "My dear friend, Russell did not predict that World War would set in, but that `righteousness and peace' would fill the redeemed world."

It must have been somewhat embarrassing for Russell to live as long as he did. He outlived the date he had fixed. And what developed is real interesting. What Russell had predicted did not happen. What did Russell do? When the year 1914 approached, he changed the date to 1915. He also said "it may be 191G" In the year 1916 he died. Later "The Watch Tower" stated that might be 1924 or 1928.

How much better it would have been, if Russell had clung to the clear teaching of the Bible. It tells us "of that day and hour knoweth no man." God has wisely kept it from us. And then we must be willing to be ignorant on this point. We must give heed to the many signs that will precede and usher in these great events. We must continually watch and be prepared. But the exact time we do not know.

SECOND PROBATION

Russellism teaches that in the millennium there will be a second chance to be saved. It is true, that Russell says the dead do not exist. But he also surprises us by saying that during the millennium they will be recreated. And then they will be given another chance to accept the Gospel. They will have this chance for at least 100 years. It will be under circumstances much more favorable, than those which obtain in this present age. In this life circumstances have been too unfavorable. In fact "only the Lord's favored little flock (the Russellites) have as yet sufficient light to incur the final penalty." So man must again be placed on trial.

And Russellism teaches that all will have that opportunity. Not only those who have not heard the Gospel. But "those who do not receive a full knowledge, and by faith an enjoyment of the favor of God in the present time, will have that opportunity." And where does Russell find proof for this? He refers to 1 Tim. 2:6, where we read "The man Jesus Christ gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time." From this Russell concludes that the Gospel must be preached to all. But suppose this were the real meaning, how could it follow that also those who hear and reject the Gospel in this life will have another opportunity? Has Russell a right to include them, simply on the grounds that circumstances here were unfavorable?

The Bible tells us "now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation." Again: "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?" Again: "The hour is coming, when they that have done evil, shall come forth unto – unto what? Unto a second chance? No, "unto condemnation." And again: "It is appointed unto men once to die and after that-" a second chance? No, "after that judgment." The Bible repeatedly warns us to make a choice in this life. Because this life determines.

THE DESTINY OF THE WICKED

Russellism dwells a great deal on the eternal destiny of those that are lost. And, no doubt, it is popular with many people, because of what it teaches on this point.

Russellism teaches there is no such thing as everlasting pain for the wicked. Those who, even after a second chance, refuse to accept the Gospel, will simply be annihilated. They will cease to exist. Russell says it is not Scripture, but the church that teaches that there is everlasting pain for the impenitent. But this is either ignorance on the part of the leaders, or they teach this, because they think it will be influential in holding people in check. Many people are held in check only by feats of torture. But when the Bible speaks of death it always means non-existence. "Death is a period of absolute unconsciousness, more than that it is a period of absolute non-existence." "The dead are dead, utterly destroyed."

MEANING OF DEATH

Let us test Russell's definition of death. Jesus said: "Let the dead bury their dead." According to Russell, we would have to read: "Let those who do not exist bury those who do not exist." Can you imagine Jesus making such a statement? John says: "We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren." According to Russell, this would mean: "We know that we have come from non-existence to life, because we love the brethren." But what an idea would that be! Such contradictions could easily be multiplied. But this is sufficient to show to what sheer nonsense Russellism would lead us.

The Bible teaches that the soul does continue to exist after death. Jesus said we should not fear them which kill the body but cannot kill the soul. He tells us that, not only Lazarus, but also the rich man, continued to exist after death. [Luke 16:19-31] Some will answer that this is a parable, and that we must be very careful in drawing conclusions from it. Yes, but if that parable doesn't teach continued existence, it does not teach anything at all. The soul continues to exist after death. And its condition may be life which is existence in the favor of God, or death, which is existence separated from his favor. [Jesus never named individuals in His parables, in addition, Jesus always used physical realities – real things – that illustrated corresponding spiritual realties: never did He use “science fiction” as He would be in Luke 16, if a soul after death was not conscious of pain.]

DESTROY?

But 'we read that God "can destroy both soul and body in hell." There you have the word "destroy." If you destroy a thing, it does not exist any more. That ought to settle it. In 1 Thess. 1:9 we read that God will punish with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord. Is that not the same as annihilation?

But it cannot mean the same as annihilation. This meaning cannot be ascribed to the basic root of the Greek word used here in II Thessalonians 1:9. The same root, although in a different form, is found in Luke 19:10 where we read that the Son of Man came "to seek and to save what was lost." To substitute annihilation for lost in this sentence would be absurd. Similarly, in Luke 15:4 we read: "What man of you having a hundred sheep, if he lose one of them doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness and go after that which was lost, until he found it?" The Greek words for lose and lost have the same basic root as the word used in II Thessalonians 1:9. Again the substitution of the idea of annihilation for lose and lost would make the passage meaningless: "What man of you having a hundred sheep, if one of them be annihilated, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness and go after that which was annihilated." It ought to be clear from these passages that something may be said to be destroyed (lost) in a certain sense and yet exist. The soul of the wicked will be destroyed, and yet will continue to exist.

But what then does destroy mean in such passages in the Bible ? Let us go back to those passages where in the original language this word is applied to sheep. What does it mean there, when it is stated that the sheen is lost? It means that it is separated from the shepherd. Separated from his loving care. And for a sheep in a wilderness that means ruin and misery.

So when the soul of man is said to be destroyed or lost. It means that the soul is separated from God its Shepherd. Separated from his favor and care. And for man that means ruin and misery.

Man was originally created in fellowship with God, enjoying his favor and care - something, absolutely necessary for his well-being. To lose that fellowship spells ruin and misery for man. He can no longer be happy. Darkness, pain and torture must creep upon him. And that is what comes upon man as a result of rejecting the Gospel of salvation. To some extent it may be experienced already in this life. But it will be fully upon him in the life to come.

This explanation agrees with other expressions used in the Bible concerning everlasting punishment. The destiny of the wicked is said to be "one of weeping and gnashing of teeth," "an everlasting pain," "a fire that shall not be quenched," "where the worm does not die," And did not Jesus issue the most solemn warnings against sin because of its consequences? In eleven out of twelve times that he referred to the punishment of the impenitent, he uttered a most serious warning against the eternal consequences of sin. There would have been no reason for this, if the consequences of sin were merely annihilation. [In Mt. 25:46 we read, “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” How can everlasting life for the saved be just that – everlasting – but punishment be annihilation? And lest one suppose that the punishment is not an active realization of torment, in Mt. 25:41 Jesus declares unto them on His left hand, “Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels,” and when we turn to Revelation 20:10 we read, that “the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” “And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night” (Rev. 14:11). To make eternal punishment anything less that that is to make a mockery of Christ's words, which declared that it is better to pluck out one's eye, if it causes us to sin, than to “go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched” (Mk. 9:43-48). If a life of sin, and the result of rejecting Christ is mere annihilation and the missing of God's kingdom, would not most souls consider the pleasures of sin worth it all? Instead, the Scripture appeal to the fact that only a fool would count it worth it to enjoy a season of sin for an eternity of torment, in addition to missing the life that is to be had in Christ now, and eternal glory later, but those who trust and obey Him.]

Russellism may argue that God is a God of love. To be sure, He is. And we should be immensely grateful for it. But he is also a righteous Judge. He must punish impenitence according to its greatness. And that means a terrible penalty even though we shudder as we think of these things. No annihilation can satisfy his justice.

A SOLEMN WARNING

We know that Russellism makes a great deal of some subjects that are popular. People are not equally interested in all parts of the Bible. Some parts of it are preferred above others. Some, for example, are rather curious about what pertains to the future. The Russeliites come along and advertise attractive books and lectures on such themes. "To Hell and back again." "Where are the Dead?" "Millions now living that shall never die." That sounds interesting. They go and listen. The speaker tackles the most difficult subjects and prophecies. He talks as if he knows all about it. He actually succeeds in impressing his audience that he is really an authority on the subject in hand. Many people do not stop to consider whether it is all true what they have heard. They find some satisfaction in having an explanation. And they will frequently accept the greatest absurdities without any serious objection.

Russellism also preaches an agreeable theology. It answers many important questions in a pleasant way. For example, when it tells the people that those who reject the Gospel here will have another opportunity in the life hereafter. And when it tells the people, that if they even then reject it, their destiny will be nothing worse than annihilation. So that the impenitent sinner has after all nothing serious to fear. Such language pleases the people. Paul tells us that the Gospel he preached was "not after man." But Russellism goes to great pains to make it so.

We must also bear in mind that in Russellism Satan comes as an angel of light. Therefore it does the more easily deceive the ignorant and unwary

Not all that you find in the literature of Russellism is false. One can sometimes read a great deal in succession that is entirely true. I can very well imagine someone picking up one of Russell's books, read a piece in it, and wonder what is wrong with it.

But that is just where the danger of Russellism lies. It comes in the name of Christ, but denies the Christ of the Bible. It professes to defend the Bible as the infallible Word of God, but it twists it to serve its own pet ideas. Russell condemns the atheism of Robert Ingersoll, but his own works are even more dangerous.

We are living in an age that offers a greater mixture of truth and error than any previous age. Jesus has told us that the time will come when many shall say: "Lo, here is Christ." And others again will point in another direction. Have we perhaps come to that age? It is remarkable that so many of the existing sects are of recent origin. This much is sure, that we must be on our guard more in our own day than ever before. We should not believe every spirit, but try the spirits whether they be of God.

JESUS CHRIST Came To Save Sinners

Consider your Soul in the Light of Eternity

There is a God - your Creator, Who has given us both good things and good laws. But “All have sinned” (Rm. 3:23), breaking His good laws and misusing the good things which He has given us for our benefit. Your sins have separated you from God, and no sin will be, or should be, allowed into the Holy presence of God's dwelling (Is. 59:1, 2; Rv. 21:27). If you die in your sins - if you have not cast all your faith upon Him to save you and had all your sins washed away by His precious blood - you will go to a real place that is just the opposite of Heaven, a place of weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth (Mt. 8:12; 13:42 KJV). Jesus said, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God” (Jn. 3:3-7). You must be born spiritually by the Holy Spirit of Christ.

Right now you are in one of two spiritual conditions, dead in sins or alive in Christ; traveling on one of two paths, the broad way that leads to everlasting destruction or the narrow way that leads to everlasting life; heading for one of two eternal places, the Lake of Fire or the Heavenly City (Eph. 2:1; Mt. 7:14; 1Thes. 1:8-10; Rev. 20-22). The Only Way you can have your sins forgiven and get back to God is through the Lord JESUS CHRIST, whom the Father sent to save you (Acts 4:12; 13:39; 1Jn. 4:10, 14).

It is He who came down from Heaven to live a completely sinless and perfect life, showing us what God is like in His love and righteousness, And it is He who took responsibility for all we have done wrong, paying for our sins with His own sinless blood on the cross of His death. And having done all, it is He who rose from the dead to Heaven as your present Savior and future Judge (Act 10:39-43). Neither the Pope, Mary, Muhammad, Buddha, etc. can save you. Your church membership, “good deeds,” praying to saints, etc. will not make you right with God. Only the One who came down from Heaven to die for you and rose again “is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them” (Heb. 7:25).

What you do with Jesus Christ, “God manifest in the flesh” (1Tim. 3:16) reveals what you ultimately love and where you will spend ETERNITY.

Will you choose sin and it's bondage or Christ and His salvation? “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:36). “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation” (Heb. 2:3).

We pray that you, dear soul, will not be a fool and sin away your day of grace but instead will choose Christ and His Life today. “Forsake the foolish and live” (Prv. 9:6). Humble yourself as a guilty and helpless sinner and ask the Lord Jesus to save you, giving your sins and life to Him. “the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner” (Lk. 18:13).

“God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Ja. 4:6; Prv. 28:13; Acts 3:19; Rm. 10:9).

This decision is shown by being baptized under water in identification with your Lord, then following Him with a Bible-preaching church, rejoicing in Christ (despite persecutions)!

"Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:41, 42 ).

The following is a compilation of the multiplicity of false prophecies and statements by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, otherwise known as the (so-called) Jehovah's Witnesses, and was written in response to proselytizing attempts by their workers.

Dear Witness,

This document pertains to the Watchtower Bible and Tract Societies worthiness of trust. The reason for this being important is because you are not simply calling me to believe an erroneous gospel, but (as part of that) to place my confidence in an organization that sets forth itself as God sole mouthpiece on earth*, and His prophet. But as is evident by history, this is sinful presumption, and which the Bible condemns. The true gospel of Christ does not bring men to trust in an organization to be saved, even if they claim to be “God's prophet on the earth,” but calls souls to look directly to the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation (as in the above message). No church or organization is worthy of the level of trust that the Watchtower Society has historically required, and much less one that has so often prophesied falsely in the name of Jehovah, thereby taking His name in vain! “

You are welcome to discuss the evidence or conclusions set forth here via the email address above. We should follow the example of the apostles of old, who "renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God" (2Cor. 42). “A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies” (Prv. 14:25). And therefore Ihope that you will see that the boldness of some of my comments are warranted in the light of the evidence. I am to hate deception and love the truth, and I pray you will do the same.

The following is a list of documented misleading and false predictions taken from official Watchtower Publications made by the organization that you would have me to implicitly trust in. Such failures cannot be explained away by the "progressive light" principle, for overall most of these predictions were not merely speculative, or optional for adherents to believe in, rather the Watchtower Society typically gave strong assurance that Armageddon would occur by a certain date, and disagreement or doubt by members in the congregation was typically seen as weakness or rebellion. Such assured predictions and required faith sets the Watchtower Society up to an god, and Jehovah God commands, “Thou shalt have no other gods before Me“ (Ex. 20:3). And by effectively placing their writings on a level of authority with Scripture, the Watchtower Society basically is adding to it, and so shall suffer the curses of those that do (Rev. 22:18). I pray that instead you give your sins and life directly to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, and be born from above! [Bold emphasis is mine, and comments by me following the quotes are in brackets].

Watchtower Society presumes to be God's chosen mouthpiece.

It is the Watchtower Society (herein referred to as the WTS) that declares themselves to be God's prophet and once invited us to make such an examination:

"So, does Jehovah have a prophet to help them, to warn them of dangers and to declare things to come? These questions can be answered in the affirmative. Who is this prophet? ...This 'prophet' was not one man, but was a body of men and women. It was the small group of footstep followers of Jesus Christ, known at that time as International Bible Students. Today they are known as Jehovah's Christian witnesses... Of course, it is easy to say that this group acts as a 'prophet' of God. It is another thing to prove it. The only way that this can be done is to review the record. What does it show? [Indeed, just what does it show???]

Accountability

This claim, that WTS is speaking for God - to be His mouthpiece on the earth - has many times been affirmed by them explicitly and implicitly since times of their founder, Charles Taze Russell. According to the Word of God, preachers of His Word are held to higher accountability, and will suffer "greater condemnation" (James 3:1) for their errors. How much more accountable are they who presume for themselves an essential infallibility, whether stated or implied, when their interpretations of essential doctrines cannot pass the test of objective, careful examination in the full light of the written Word of God, or, as concerns predictions, the record of history,

The Test Of A True Prophet:

It has been said that truth is life. Truth bring spiritual life and liberty, while deception works death and bondage. If someone gives you wrong directions you can end up in the wrong place, or live for the wrong thing or for a good thing in the wrong way. And if a liar presumes to validate his words by claiming them to be that of a truthful person, then the liar is using the truthful person's name "in vain." And when the words fail to come true it dishonors the good persons character. A person who gives souls "wrong directions" to God by preaching a false gospel (means of salvation) or who makes false predictions in His Name, actually works to damn souls which Christ died to save, and profanes God's character, which is proven to be holy, just and true, and merciful. It is therefore that the Biblical requirements for a true prophet mandate that he truly does speak in the Name of the Lord - that his message is in accordance with the Bible - and that his prophecies are 100% accurate.

Deu 18:20 - 22 makes this quite clear:

"But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.”

It may be discerned that there are two categories here, one being that of a soul who professes to be speaking in the name of the True and Living God of the Bible when he is not, with the other being that of one who speaks in the name of another god, and for both the death penalty was incurred. That this is this is the case (and that Dt.18 is not simply referring a false Messiah) is shown by the fact that men like Pashur (Jer. 28:11-17; cf. 11:21-23; Zech. 13:3) committed a sin into death by prophesying falsely in the name of the Lord, as opposed to seeking to lead souls to other gods.

An examination of Biblical prophecies, rightly understood, will reveal that they came to pass how, where and when they were prophesied to have done so, and were complimentary with the doctrine which had been established as faithful and true in the Scriptures.

But in clear contrast to a true man of God and prophet, the WTS preaches "another gospel" by "another spirit" with "another Jesus" (2Cor. 11:4), and which false gospel we will examine later, and have made numerous false predictions since their beginning in the latter half of the 1800's. Such a "lying spirit" (1Kg. 22:22) by which they speak are both a test for the true people of God who are called to lift up Jesus Christ (the Way, the Truth, and the Life), and by Him to "prove all things," as well as a judgment upon a society that does not want the True Jesus of the Bible to reign over them (cf. Lk. 19:14; Acts 7:39-42; 1Tim. 4:1; 2Tim. 3:13).

Typically, false prophets mix much truth (some of which the established is reluctant to preach) with their deceptions (they may even manage to make a few true predictions, or discernments), and a lying spirit knows how to excuse himself after his assured predictions fail to come to pass. The following are documented predictions, taken from official WTS publications, made before the dates of their predicted fulfillments (1914, 15, 1925, and 1975 respectively), and then statements made after those predictions failed. Certain words of theirs i have given emphasis to.

False prophecies by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society

1897, The Battle of Armageddon, Studies in the Scriptures, Vol. 4, p. 621:

"Our Lord, the appointed King, is now present, since October 1874, A.D., according to the testimony of the prophets, to those who have ears to hear it." [In contrast to this WTS doctrine, the Bible knows nothing of an invisible coming of the Lord to the earth to set up His kingdom. The clear doctrine of His second coming to the earth is that "this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven" (Acts 1:11 - spoken to His discples). The disciples literally saw Him ascend up into Heaven, and there is absolutely nothing in this statement that suggests anything less that a literal coming with a literal seeing. Not only will believers see Him, but "Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen" (Rev. 1:7).]

1888, The Time Is At Hand, p. 76, 77

"In this chapter we present the Bible evidence proving that the full end of the times of the gentiles, i.e., the full end of their lease of dominion, will be reached in A.D. 1914; and that the date will be the farthest limit of the rule of imperfect men. And be it observed, that if this is shown to be a fact firmly established by the Scriptures, it will prove; Firstly, that at that date the Kingdom of God, for which our Lord taught us to pray, saying, Thy Kingdom come, will obtain full, universal control, and that it will then be set up, or firmly established, in the earth, on the ruins of present institutions." [It is part of fleshly arrogance to presume to know that which God states no man knows. If the WTS had feared the Lord enough to take the following verse to heart, that could have saved themselves from much sorrow. "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only" (Mast. 24:26).]

"In the coming 26 years, all present governments will be overthrown and dissolved." [What foolishness this prediction manifests; what deception! Even more incredible is that no matter how many time predictions like these have failed, multitude still continue to place their implicit trust in the WTS organization, whose claim to such worthiness (of trust) is based on her self-proclaimed but disproven prophet - of - God status.]

".. They are, we believe, God's dates, not ours. But bear in mind that the end of 1914 is not the date for the beginning, but for the end of the time of trouble." [The reader will take note of the many affirmations of the Heavenly sourse of their pronouncements, and then compare them with later attempts to try to deliver themselves from guilt.]

"A few more years will wind up the present order of things, and then the chastened world will stand face to face with the actual conditions of the established Kingdom of God. And yet the course of the Church is to be finished within the space of time that intervenes."

[Like setting a clock ahead in the spring (in America), the WTS sets it's eschatological (end times) clock ahead with seeming ease.]

"...the 'battle of the great day of God Almighty' (Rev. 16:14), which will end in A.D. 1914 with the complete overthrow of earth's present rulership is already commenced." ["No comparison" to Rev. 19 - 20]

Intelligence: Russell provides his insight into determining the intelligence of a being. "Stand a man alongside of a dog. Look at their heads. The one slopes back; there is no place for the intellectual qualities at all, or at least a very small place for the thinking apparatus man has. He has more brain than the dog. If we could make a dog with the same head as a man, he would think the same as a man" [Though not directly related to prophetic claims, such statements reveal that their "wisdom" is most assuredly not "from above," despite what the WTS has implied and claimed for founder Russell and itself (see 1922; Watch Tower, May 1, p. 132).]

"There is absolutely no ground for Bible students to question that the consummation of this Gospel age is now even at the door, and that it will end as the Scriptures foretell in a great time of trouble such as never was since there was a nation. We see the participants in this great crisis banding themselves together… The great crisis, the great clash, symbolically represented as a fire, that will consume the ecclesiastical heavens and the social earth, is very near." [Ground-less prediction and spiritualization]

Making provision for failure. As 1914 draws to a close, the false prognostications of the WTS seek to make some room whereby they make extricate themselves from the hole they have dug. Despite claims of "Bible evidence proving," it to be "an established truth" that the full establishment of the Kingdom of God, will be accomplished at the end of A. D. 1914," they now disclaim such positive assertions. Yet were not those supposedly God's dates, not ours."

[What was discovered long ago was that out of the WTS flows deception like a leakey faucet. According to the false doctrine of the WTS, only 14,000 (see Rev. 7:4) are born again and go to Heaven to be with the Lord, while a second "Jonadab class" ("other sheep") make up the "great crowd" of Rev. 7:9. They claim that souls in this category are not born again, cannot go to be with Jehovah in Heaven, but hope to survive Armageddon to live on paradise earth. However, it is systematically clear in the Bible that it is impossible to even see the Kingdom of God unless one is born again (Jn. 3:3-7), and that whoever truly believes on the Lord Jesus Christ is born of the Spirit of Christ (Acts 2:38; 10:34-47; 15:7-9; Eph. 1:13), and are already positionally in His kingdom (Col. 1:13), and that those who leave this life in the faith shall "ever be with the Lord" (1Thes. 4:17). Their latter statement (above) concerning proud elders was probably an attempt to denigrate those who left the WTS after being hyped and disappointed once too many.]

"...mark the words of Jesus, which definitely seem to discourage the bearing of children immediately before or during Armageddon....It would therefore appear that there is no reasonable or scriptural injunction to bring children into the world immediately before Armageddon, where we now are." [This exhortation makes it clear that the expectation of an "at hand" coming of the Lord, is not as an historical constant, as if written for generations to come, but is one in the immediate sense, as in the next few years (of child bearing ability. Nor is it simply a warning of impending trouble such as the church has experienced, but nothing less than that of Armageddon is expected.]

If this conclusion is Scripturally correct, then it would mean that those men and women forming the 'great multitude' will marry and bring forth children in righteousness and unto life....Would it be Scripturally proper for them to now marry and to begin to rear children? At San Deigo, California, there is a small piece of land, on which, in the year 1929 there was built a house, which is called and known as Beth Sarim. The Hebrew words Beth Sarim mean 'House of the Princes'; and the purpose of acquiring that property and building the house was that there are those on earth today who fully believe in God and Christ Jesus and in His Kingdom, and who believe that the faithful men of old will soon be resurrected by the Lord, be back on earth, and take charge of the visible affairs of earth. The title to Beth Sarim is vested in the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society in trust, to be used by the president of the Society and his assistants for the present, and thereafter to be forever at the disposal of the aforementioned princes on the earth..

[Until further revision (as needed), the basic WTS stance is that Armageddon will come within the time span of the generation of 1914. The problem with that, in addition to having no real Biblical support, is how long is a generation? Biblically, it could be 40 years (as in the wilderness experience of Israel) or 70 to 80 years (Ps. 90), or conceivably till the last person living in 1914 was dead. At any rate, it served them well, for they can always use a "the next few years" expectation with that window. Of course, we who believe the Bible and have been born of the Spirit of God by repentance and faith directly in the Son of God do believe Jesus will come back as promised. That Biblical fact is what the WTS (by the devil who knows the Bible and that his end will come) seeks to manipulate people by to their own gain. But an examination of what Christ promised and to whom He promised eternal life reveals that the WTS are clearly "doing their own thing" to the hurt of many.]

"According to this trustworthy Bible chronology six thousand years from man's creation will end in 1975, and the seventh period of a thousand years of human history will begin in the fall of 1975 C.E. Six thousand years of man's existence on earth will soon be up, yea within this generation. The rein of Christ...to run parallel with the 7th millennium ..." [[True to form, when expectations failed (and likely served their purpose), the WTS went back to the drawing board and came up with a way out, that of calculating from Adam. This means of predicting the end of this present world system by dating from Adam is nothing new for the WTS organization: their founder, Charles Taze Russell taught in his study, "The Time is at Hand," Pg. 54, that 6,000 years from the creation of Adam were complete with A.D. 1872." Now almost a 100 years later it is used again. Of course, this present world system will indeed come to an end when the Lord returns, and others have used various means of calculation to predict an end of a 6,000 year reign of fallen man. Though there is a principle in Scripture that reveals the number 7 denoting completion, we do not know for sure how long man has reigned on the earth. And in any case, we are not to dishonor the Lord by setting dates as Bible truth. The devil surely rejoices at every such false enticement and resultant failure, as it offers man, who is by nature in rebellion to God and looks for an excuse, a seemingly valid one not to believe. In contrast, the Bible, being always a book of balance and whose truth transcends time, is written to be relevant for all generations, and states the reality of Christ second coming in such a way that every generation should be ready for it, and therefore never sets dates for His return. It does however, set forth events indicative of His coming, both literal and symbolic, in which should be allowed a certain measure of interpretation. The fault of the WTS is that because their doctrine of who Christ is and how men are saved are clearly contrary to the Bible, so their means of interpretation of end time events are spurious, and their claim and exercise of authority unwarranted by Scripture.]

Today, also, God requires and exacts from his children obedience honor and respect. These must be rendered not only to the living God himself, but to his wifely organization as well." [The application of this was one of intolerance for honest objectivity that required disagreement with the WTS, strict separation from Christians and Bible ministries, with the real threat of expulsion for those who even went inside Christian bookstores.

Why not? Well, the Bible record shows that God's creations on the 'day' just preceding that 7,000-year 'rest day' did not end with Adam's creation. It shows a time lapse between the creation of Adam and that of his wife, Eve. During that time, God had Adam name the animals. Whether that period amounted to weeks or months or years, we do not know. So we do not know exactly when Jehovah's great 'rest day' began, nor do we know exactly when it will end. The same applies to the beginning of Christ's millennial reign." (The Watchtower, 10-1-75, p. 579)

This is so because there was a time lapse of unspecified length between Adam's creation and the creation of Eve. Not until after the creation of Eve did God's 'rest day' begin. Psalm 146:3: “Put not your trust in princes, ...”

The Watchtower Society goes to court

“A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies” Prov. 14:5). The WTS falsities neither begin nor end with explicitly false predictions, and here their founder first uses the world's system to deal with Scriptural spiritual reproof, and then perjures himself in court by lying about his ability to know Greek (the original language of New Testament manuscripts).

Charles Taze Russell goes to court:

Watchtower founder, Charles Taze Russell once sued a Baptist pastor, Rev. J.J. Ross for libel after the minister published a tract entitled, Some facts about the Self-Styled "Pastor" Russell<> (Kingdom of the Cults, pp. 42-44).

According to a New York newspaper, The Brooklyn Eagle, (11 January 1913, p. 7) Rev. Ross, the pastor of the James Street Baptist Church of Hamilton, Ontario, accused Russell (among other charges) of teaching, "the destructive doctrines of one man who was neither a scholar nor a theologian," (Ibid).

Russell's attorney was none other that Joseph F. Rutherford who was to become the Society's next president after Russell's death in 1916.

Russell lost this case and was unable to prove libel in Rev. Ross's accusations that Russell, "...never attended the higher schools of learning; knows comparatively nothing of philosophy, systematic or historical theology and is totally ignorant of the dead languages," (Ibid; emphasis added).

A portion from the legal transcript reveals a small amount of the overwhelming evidence that helped Rev. Ross win in court.

The following is taken from the transcript as Rev. Ross's attorney, Mr. Staunton cross-examining C.T. Russell in the case Russell v. Ross.

Question: (Attorney Staunton) "Do you know the Greek Alphabet?"

Answer: (Russell) "Oh yes."

Question: (Staunton) "Can you tell me the correct letters if you see them?"

Answer: (Russell) "Some of them, I might make a mistake on some of them."

Question: (Staunton) "Would you tell me the names of those on top of the page, page 447 I have got here?"

Answer: (Russell) "Well, I don't know that I would be able to."

Question: (Staunton) "You can't tell what those letters are, look at them and see if you know?"

Answer: (Russell) "My way ..." [he was interrupted at this point and not allowed to explain]

Question: (Staunton) "Are you familiar with the Greek language?"

Answer: (Russell) "No."

(Ibid, p. 44).

Russell first claimed to know the greek alphabet, then when challenged stated he just knew, "some of them" and may make mistakes on some other letters, but when made to face Greek letters themselves, Russell admitted that he did not know Greek – which was one of the main points of Ross's supposedly "libellous" pamphlet.

Scottish Court of Sessions in November 1954; False prophecy, unwarranted trust – or death!

Like most cults, honest disagreement and discussion of possible fallacies are little tolerated, as many a former Jehovah's witness have testified, and is substantiated by many official statements. The following is actual testimony from the Dough Walsh v. James Latham Clyde trial that was held in the Scottish Court of Sessions in November 1954. In an attempt by the Watchtower Society to establish before the British court that certain of its members were ordained ministers (and therefore exempt from military service), certain high ranking leaders of the Society testified it it's defense. Among them were WTS vice-president Fred Franz and legal counsel for the Society, Haydon C. Covington. In this portion of testimony, the following admissions by Mr. Covington are made in response to questioning from the attorney for the Ministry of Labour and National Service.

Q. Back to the point now. A false prophesy was promulgated?

A. I agree that.

Q. It had to be accepted by Jehovah's Witnesses?

A. That is correct.

Q. If a member of Jehovah's Witnesses took the view himself that that prophesy was wrong and said so he would be disfellowshipped?

A. Yes, if he said so and kept persisting in creating trouble, because if the whole organisation believes one thing, even though it be erroneous and somebody else starts on his own trying to put his ideas across then there is disunity and trouble, there cannot be harmony, there cannot be marching. When a change comes it should come from the proper source, the head of the organisation, the governing body, not from the bottom upwards, because everybody would have ideas, and the organisation would disintegrate and go in a thousand different directions. Our purpose is to have unity.

Q. Unity at all costs?

A. Unity at all costs, because we believe and are sure that Jehovah God is using our organisation, the governing body of our organisation to direct it, even though mistakes are made from time to time.

Q. And unity based upon an enforced acceptance of false prophecy?

A. That is conceded to be true.

Q. And the person who expressed his view, as you say, that it was wrong, and was disfellowshipped, would be in breach of the Covenant, if he was baptized?

A. That is correct.

Q. And as you said yesterday expressly, would be worthy of death?

A. I think - - -

Q. Would you say yes or no?

A. I will answer yes, unhesitatingly.

Q. Do you call that religion?

A. It certainly is.

Q. Do you call it Christianity?

A. I certainly do.

The New World (mis)translation goes to court

2 Cor 4:2 “But [we] have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

The emperor has no clothes; The principal translator of the , WTS New World Translation, (then) Vice President Franz, perjures himself in court by falsely claiming he could read Hebrew.

In the same case, WTS President Fredrick W. Franz, like that of his original predecessor, perjured himself in testimony concerning his professed (but not possessed) ability to read and translate original Biblical language. This is quite relevant today, not only because it provides another example of the prevarication of the WTS, but because much unwarranted credence is attributed to the “made to order” WTS New World Translation* Unlike most other translations of the Bible (above all the KJV), this official WTS translation of the Bible had only 5 translators, with WTS President Franz being the only one that publicly identified himself as such (see section following the below).

We pick up the cross-examination of Mr Franz from Tuesday, 23rd November, 1954

"Q. Have you also made yourself familiar with Hebrew?

"A. Yes

"Q. Do you also know and speak Spanish, Portuguese and French?

"A. Spanish, Portuguese and German; but I have a reading knowledge of French.

"Q. So that you have a substantial linguistic apparatus at your command?

"A. Yes, for use in my Biblical work.

"Q. I think you are able to read and follow the Bible in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Spanish, Portuguese, German and French?

"A. Yes.

"Q. And was it your duty on behalf of the Society to check the translation into English from the original Hebrew of that first volume of the Old Testament Scriptures [New World Translation]?

"A. Yes"

The very next day a simple test was put forth by government attorneys in order to check the professed linguistic abilities of Mr. Franz:

"Q. You, yourself, read and speak Hebrew, do you?

"A. I do not speak Hebrew.

"Q. You do not?

"A. No.

"Q. Can you, yourself, translate that into Hebrew?

"A. Which?

"Q. That fourth verse of the Second Chapter of Genesis?

"A. You mean here?

"Q. Yes?

"A. No. I won't attempt to do that."

Both the idea of a secret translation committee and that the only publicly identified member (and who was responsible for the accuracy of the Old Testament Translation) was unable to translate a simple passage from Genesis 2 into English is clearly contrary to renouncing "the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God" (2 Cor. 4:2).

Who controls you?

Who will you obey?

With whom will you be?

You are in a spiritual battle:

"we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Eph. 6:12).

You are either one of two spiritual conditions (dead in sins or alive in Christ), serving one of two masters in one of two kingdoms (the Lord JESUS or Satan, in Light or Darkness) and traveling on one of two roads (the broad way that leads to torment in Hell or the narrow way that leads unto everlasting life with JESUS in Heaven. How you respond to this message will reveal which condition you are in!

The devil, whom the Lord JESUS declared was “a murderer from the beginning” and a liar “because there is no truth in him” (Jn. 8:44) seeks your eternal destruction. Hating God and His character, this malevolent, proud, arrogant, hateful and deceitful being "as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1Pet. 5:8).

Satan has your eternal destruction as his goal.

Though the devil works to bring you to be a slave to sin, self, and false gods, his ultimate goal is to keep you away from the True and Living God, from turning to he Lord Jesus Christ from sin and receiving Him to save you!

“But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world (satan) hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” (2Cor. 4:3, 4).

Sin separates you from God, and to die in your sins means you will end up in a real place that is just the opposite of Heaven: the Lake of Fire! ”Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels... And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal” (Mat. 25:41, 46).

Sins include such things as idolatry (making created things your chief security and object of affection), adultery and fornication (sexual activity in heart or deed outside of, or before, marriage), sodomy, profanity, lying, theft (of any kind), drunkenness, witchcraft, etc.

The devil himself will suffer forever! “ “And the devil that deceived them (you, if you are not saved) was cast into the Lake of Fire and Brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night forever and ever.” So shall be the end of those who choose sin over the Lord JESUS (Rev. 20:10-15; Acts 4:12).

God wants to save you, and spared not His own Son to do so (Rm. 8:32)!

“God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2Pet. 3:9). For this cause He sacrificially sent His Only Begotten Son - JESUS, -to be the Savior of the world. It is He “who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him” (Acts 10:38).

“Who loved me and gave Himself for me -” bearing all our sins in His own body on the cross of His death, and paying for them with His own precious, sinless blood (Gal. 2:20; cf. 1Pt. 2:24)!

It is this Jesus that rose alive and ascended to the Father, who now stands as your Present Savior (if you accept Him) and Future Judge (whom all must face: Acts 10:41, 42).

You need to repent and turn to God: “Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2Cor. 6:2). Humble yourself as a lost sinner in the sight of God, and cast away any idea that you can be accepted into Heaven because of some goodness you think you have, and pray to the Lord JESUS to save you on His account: “In whom we have redemtion through His blood.” “Not by works of righteousness, but according to his mercy..” (Col. 1:7; Titus 3:5). “He that cometh to Me i will in no wise cast out.” “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Jn. 6:37; Rom. 10:9).

This is your Eternal Choice.

God will save you only because of JESUS when you truly believe and receive Him. Then you will know what it is to be “born again.” You show this decision in being baptised and then serving Him with a Bible-believing brethren. “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:41, 42).
