FABLE #2: Attacking the Divinity of the Lord Jesus ^

Is it true that, as Da Vinci Code's fictional Leigh Teabing states, “Constantine upgraded Jesus' status almost four centuries after Jesus death”, and “rewrote” history by commissioning and financing “a new Bible, which omitted those gospels that spoke of Christ’s human traits and embellished those gospels that made Him godlike”, as http://www.probe.org/content/view/127/169/

What will Mr. Teabing tell us next (don't ask!)? Such wishful fantasies requires an ignorance of both the the Scriptures themselves and the historicity of the canon (writings recognized as wholly inspired of God and authoritative). Seeing that the 1st century Biblical gospels and writings (and 2nd and 3rd century manuscripts) came well before 4th century Constantine, he is ineligible for copy write protection. Not only do the ancient gospels and N.T. Books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John declare Jesus to be The Son of God, and directly reveal that He is one with Father in His Divine nature, with God' unique titles, attributes and glory being attributed to Him, but they also abundantly show his humanity, and more literally than the gnostic nonsense (which saw Jesus more like a phantom) Brown's Mr. Teabing seems to be so fond of.

In addition, the Hebrew Scriptures, in a two fold prophecy, speaks of the Messiah who would come, and who was more than the mere mortal Brown would reduce Him to :

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Is. 9:6).

Likewise, Micah 5:2: But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

Pre Nicean writings of early leaders also confirm the antiquity of this evident doctrine. As James Kennedy writes, “Cracking Da Vinci's Code" authors Jim Garlow and Peter Jones have compiled a list of several Church Fathers – all of whom wrote before the Council of Nicea in A.D. 325 – affirming this most basic Christian doctrine that Jesus was divine. Those Fathers include: Ignatius (writing in A.D. 105), Clement (150), Justin Martyr (160), Irenaeus (180), Tertullian (200), Origen (225), Novatian (235), Cyprian (250), Methodius (290), Lactantius (304), and Arnobius (305). Furthermore, one of the earliest Christian creeds was "Jesus is the Lord" (Kurios) (1 Corinthians 12:3)."The Da Vinci Myth Vs. The Gospel Truth" by D. James Kennedy, Ph.D., and Jerry Newcombe.

As Ben Witherington III | writes in ©Christianity Today, Why the 'Lost Gospels' Lost Out by (posted 05/21/2004),

It is no accident that, in about 180, Irenaeus, bishop of Lyons, could already speak clearly and definitively about the fourfold Gospel, specifically citing those of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. He does so as he is opposing things he deems heretical. Thus, already in the second century, he has a strong sense of what amounts to orthodoxy when it comes to the story of Jesus.

We can say without hesitation that various books that were to become part of the New Testament were already seen and used as authoritative and acceptable in the second century in various parts of the church, both Eastern and Western—and that their listing as authoritative in the early fourth century was without serious debate.

It also should be considered that during the almost 200 years (till the Edict of Toleration) in which Christians believed in the Jesus of the Biblical gospels that Brown attacks, they were much and often very severely persecuted for it, while gnostics fit more into pagan Rome (they then cauht the next wave, and amalgamated Christian beliefs). As New Testament scholar Tom Wright writes,

Those who were thrown to the lions were not reading ‘Thomas’ or Q or the ‘Gospel of Mary.’ They were reading Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and the rest, and being sustained thereby in a subversive mode of faith and life which, growing out of apocalyptic Judaism, posed a far greater threat to Roman empire and pagan worldviews than Cynic philosophy or Gnostic spirituality ever could. Why would Caesar worry about people rearranging their private spiritualities?”[14] Indeed, Caesar would have been completely unconcerned about anyone rearranging private spiritualities as the Gnostic documents suggest and as The Da Vinci Code promotes. http://www.reformation21.org/Upcoming_Issues/DaVinci_Code/176/

In addition, not only is it manifestly false that Constantine established Jesus Divinity, but he also did not silence those who denied that aspect, though he tried. Rather the Arians continued to promote their unBiblical doctrine, though their Jesus was by not the gnostic one Brown worships.

JESUS CHRIST is LORD. Only HE Can Save You, and you Must be Saved!
